FAQ

The leather

What is full grain leather?

Full grain is the outermost layer of the hide, with the natural surface left intact rather than sanded off and stamped with an artificial pattern. It is the strongest part of the hide and the only kind that develops a real patina. It is also the most expensive, which is why most bags are not made from it.

What is crazy horse leather?

Crazy horse is full grain leather finished with a heavy wax. Rub the surface and the colour shifts, then settles. Scratches lift out under a thumb rather than staying as damage. It arrives looking slightly weathered and gets better from there.

Why does my bag look different to the photograph?

Because it is a natural material. Grain, tone and marking vary across a hide and between hides, so no two pieces are identical. Small differences in shade and texture are the material behaving correctly, not a fault.

Will the colour change?

Yes. Leather darkens where it is handled and lightens where it catches sun. Within a few months your piece will have a colour it did not arrive with, concentrated in the places you touch most. That is the patina, and it is the point.

Care

How do I look after it?

Keep it dry, let it dry naturally if it does get wet, and condition it once or twice a year. Full instructions are on our Leather Care page.

What if it gets scratched?

On waxed leather, rub the scratch with your thumb and it will usually blend in. On unwaxed full grain, leave it. Scratches become part of the surface rather than a flaw in it.
