Description

The Ferrano is the rugged one. A rucksack shape with a generous main body, cut from leather heavy enough that the bag stands up on its own.

Capacity is the point here. A laptop, a jacket, a book and lunch all go in without a fight, and there is enough structure that nothing gets crushed. The straps take the load without cutting in.

It has an easy relationship with whatever you are wearing. Worn with a coat it reads considered, worn with a jacket and boots it reads like it has been used, which after a few months it will have been.

  • Heavy full grain leather
  • Large capacity main compartment
  • Fits a laptop and a day's kit
  • Structured body that stands unaided
  • Broad, comfortable shoulder straps

The oldest bag shape there is

The oldest bag shape there is

Drawstring, flap, two buckles. This design predates zips and it has outlasted most of what came after, because there is nothing in it to break. You cinch it, you close it, you go.
One space, sized honestly

One space, sized honestly

A single large compartment rather than a set of small ones. That means you can put a jumper, a laptop and a lunch in it without negotiating with the bag, and get all three out without unpacking the other two.
It softens into its shape

It softens into its shape

New, the flap is stiff and the buckles are tight. Within a couple of months the leather has learned where it folds and the buckles have worn a mark at your usual setting. It stops being a product and starts being yours.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the flap keep rain out?

It sheds light rain well because the flap overlaps the drawstring. Leather is not waterproof, so a real soaking still needs cover.

Is a laptop safe in it?

There is a sleeve inside, though the padding is lighter than a dedicated laptop pack. For heavy daily commuting look at the Corsini.

Are the buckles slow?

One buckle gets you into the top. Both come undone only when you are properly unpacking.

How big is it?

A full day bag. Comfortably a laptop, a jacket, a notebook and lunch.

Will the drawstring wear out?

It is leather rather than cord, and it is the part that darkens first. It wears in rather than through.

What leather do you use?

Full grain leather, the top layer of the hide, left unsanded so the natural grain stays intact. Several pieces use Crazy Horse leather, a waxed full grain finish that scratches into a patina rather than out of one.

Will the leather change over time?

Yes, and that is the point. Full grain darkens, softens and develops a patina shaped by how you carry it. No two pieces age the same way.

How do I care for it?

Keep it dry, wipe it with a soft cloth, and condition it two or three times a year. Store it out of direct sunlight. Avoid soaking it, and if it does get wet let it dry at room temperature rather than near heat.

How do I choose the right size?

Each listing says what the piece is built to carry, including laptop sizes where they apply. Compare that against the bag you use now, since it is a more reliable guide than a size label. If you are between two options, message us with what you carry and we will tell you which one fits.

Is the leather treated or sealed?

Only lightly. Heavy sealing is what stops leather from ageing, so the surface is left open enough to absorb oils from your hands and darken over time. That does mean it is not waterproof. Keep it out of standing water, and if it does get wet let it dry at room temperature.

Will the colour match the photographs?

Closely, but not exactly. Full grain leather takes dye differently across the hide, so tone and grain shift slightly from piece to piece, and screens render colour differently again. Treat the photographs as an honest guide rather than a swatch. That variation is a property of real leather, not a fault.
