Description

The Livorno is a handmade duffle built around a very large main compartment, with separate sections for books and hardware so the bag does not become one deep hole.

Two ways to carry: leather handles for short distances, shoulder strap for everything else. Loaded properly it balances rather than swinging, which is the difference between a bag you take and a bag that stays in the cupboard.

Handmade means small variations in grain and colour from one bag to the next. That is the material behaving like a material rather than a print, and it is the reason each one ends up looking specific to its owner.

  • Handmade from full grain leather
  • Very large main compartment
  • Separate sections for books and devices
  • Carries by handle or shoulder strap
  • Natural variation in grain and colour

Made by hand, and it shows

Made by hand, and it shows

The edges are burnished by hand and the stress points are stitched twice. Look closely and no two are identical, because a hide is not identical either. That is what handmade actually means rather than what it usually gets used to mean.
The base does the work

The base does the work

Most duffles fail at the bottom, where the weight sits. This one has a reinforced base panel so a full bag keeps its shape and does not bow in the middle when you pick it up by the handles.
It relaxes on the road

It relaxes on the road

Stiff for the first trip, then it starts to slouch slightly and hold the shape of what you pack. By the third or fourth journey it opens more easily and sits differently on a shoulder.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it hold?

A weekend comfortably, three or four days if you pack tightly.

Are the zips metal?

The zip is metal, the pulls are leather so nothing jangles or scratches the body.

Can I carry it across the body?

Yes. The strap is long enough for a crossbody carry and adjusts down for a shoulder.

Is every bag identical?

No, and that is intended. Grain and tone shift across a hide, so each one differs slightly.

How do I clean it?

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. If it needs more, a barely damp cloth and then let it dry away from heat.

What leather do you use?

Full grain leather, the top layer of the hide, left unsanded so the natural grain stays intact. Several pieces use Crazy Horse leather, a waxed full grain finish that scratches into a patina rather than out of one.

Will the leather change over time?

Yes, and that is the point. Full grain darkens, softens and develops a patina shaped by how you carry it. No two pieces age the same way.

How do I care for it?

Keep it dry, wipe it with a soft cloth, and condition it two or three times a year. Store it out of direct sunlight. Avoid soaking it, and if it does get wet let it dry at room temperature rather than near heat.

How do I choose the right size?

Each listing says what the piece is built to carry, including laptop sizes where they apply. Compare that against the bag you use now, since it is a more reliable guide than a size label. If you are between two options, message us with what you carry and we will tell you which one fits.

Is the leather treated or sealed?

Only lightly. Heavy sealing is what stops leather from ageing, so the surface is left open enough to absorb oils from your hands and darken over time. That does mean it is not waterproof. Keep it out of standing water, and if it does get wet let it dry at room temperature.

Will the colour match the photographs?

Closely, but not exactly. Full grain leather takes dye differently across the hide, so tone and grain shift slightly from piece to piece, and screens render colour differently again. Treat the photographs as an honest guide rather than a swatch. That variation is a property of real leather, not a fault.
