Description

The Montalto is a travel backpack in crazy horse leather, built multifunctional on purpose. One large compartment, three exterior pockets, an interior slip pocket.

That layout covers most of what a day asks for. School, work, an overnight trip, a flight where you would rather not check anything. It carries comfortably at full load and does not look ridiculous half empty.

Crazy horse leather is waxed all the way through the hide. Scratches lift out under a thumb, and the surface darkens unevenly over time in the places you handle most. It is meant to look used.

  • Full grain crazy horse leather
  • One large main compartment
  • Three exterior pockets and an interior slip pocket
  • Comfortable at full load
  • Scratches buff out, patina builds unevenly

Cut heavier than it needs to be

Cut heavier than it needs to be

There is a version of this bag made from thinner leather that would weigh less and cost less. This is not it. The hide is heavy because that is what makes a bag last a decade instead of two years, and because it is what lets the bag hold its shape.
Comfort is engineering, not padding

Comfort is engineering, not padding

The back panel and straps are padded, but the reason a full load sits well is the geometry: the straps anchor wide and high so the weight rides against your back rather than pulling away from it.
The finish is left open

The finish is left open

Nothing heavy has been sealed over the surface, which is why it will darken. Sealed leather stays the colour you bought it. This will not, and within a year the difference is obvious side by side.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size laptop fits?

Up to 15 inches in the interior sleeve.

Is it heavy?

Heavier than a nylon pack, yes. That is the trade for leather this thick, and most people stop noticing within a week.

Is it waterproof?

No. It sheds light rain, but leather left open enough to age is not sealed enough to be waterproof.

How is it different from the Orvieto?

They are the same family. The Orvieto is the roomier of the two; the Montalto is cut a little closer.

Does it stand up empty?

It does, which is unusual for a backpack and a direct result of the leather weight.

What leather do you use?

Full grain leather, the top layer of the hide, left unsanded so the natural grain stays intact. Several pieces use Crazy Horse leather, a waxed full grain finish that scratches into a patina rather than out of one.

Will the leather change over time?

Yes, and that is the point. Full grain darkens, softens and develops a patina shaped by how you carry it. No two pieces age the same way.

How do I care for it?

Keep it dry, wipe it with a soft cloth, and condition it two or three times a year. Store it out of direct sunlight. Avoid soaking it, and if it does get wet let it dry at room temperature rather than near heat.

How do I choose the right size?

Each listing says what the piece is built to carry, including laptop sizes where they apply. Compare that against the bag you use now, since it is a more reliable guide than a size label. If you are between two options, message us with what you carry and we will tell you which one fits.

Is the leather treated or sealed?

Only lightly. Heavy sealing is what stops leather from ageing, so the surface is left open enough to absorb oils from your hands and darken over time. That does mean it is not waterproof. Keep it out of standing water, and if it does get wet let it dry at room temperature.

Will the colour match the photographs?

Closely, but not exactly. Full grain leather takes dye differently across the hide, so tone and grain shift slightly from piece to piece, and screens render colour differently again. Treat the photographs as an honest guide rather than a swatch. That variation is a property of real leather, not a fault.
